ABOUT KVPY

The "Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana" (KVPY) is a program started in 1999 by the Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India to encourage students who are studying Basic Sciences to take up research career in Science. The aim of the program is to identify and encourage talented and motivated students to pursue career in research.

This program aims to assist the students to realize their potential and to ensure that the best scientific talent is groomed for research and development in the country. Generous fellowship and contingency grant are provided to the selected KVPY Fellows up to the pre Ph.D. level or 5 years whichever is earlier. In addition, summer camps for the KVPY Fellows are organized in prestigious research and educational institutions in the country.

The Department of Science and Technology, the nodal agency of the Government has entrusted the overall responsibility for organizing and running the KVPY Program to the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and set up a Management Committee and a National Advisory Committee (NAC) for overseeing its implementation. A core committee looks after both the day-to-day and academic aspects of the KVPY Program.

Announcement regarding National Olympiad Programme in Science subjects for 2020-2021

The national Olympiad programme in science subjects culminating in the international Olympiads of 2021 has been disrupted by the Covid19 pandemic in the country. In view of the prevailing situation, the following decisions are announced.  In a departure from the usual three-stage procedure for the selection of the teams to represent India at the international Olympiads that has been followed in previous years, the selection procedure for the 2020-2021 cycle has been condensed to a two-stage process as a one-time exception. The two stages in each subject will be: • A three-hour two-part examination called the Indian Olympiad Qualifier (IOQ), jointly organised by the Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT) and the Homi Bhabha Centre for Science Education (Tata Institute of Fundamental Research) - HBCSE (TIFR). • An Orientation-cum-Selection Camp (OCSC) organised by HBCSE.  The IOQ in each subject will be a combination of two examinations, held in a single sitting for the examinee. • Part I: National Standard Examination (NSE): This will replace the standalone NSE of other years. The duration of this part will be 1 hour and will consist of multiple-choice questions, similar in standard to the usual NSE. This part will be a screening examination for selective evaluation of the second part (INO) only and performance in this part will not play any role in the selection for the next level (OCSC). This part of IOQ in different subjects will be called National Standard Examinations (NSEs) in Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Junior Science and Physics: NSEA, NSEB, NSEC, NSEJS and NSEP, respectively. • Part II: Indian National Olympiad (INO): This will replace the standalone INO of other years. The duration of this part will be two hours and will consist of detailed questions, similar in standard to the usual INO. This part will be evaluated only for students screened through the first part (NSE), and the selection for the next level (OCSC) will be determined solely by the performance in this part. This part of IOQ in different subjects will be called Indian National Olympiads (INOs) in Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Junior Science and Physics: INAO, INBO, INChO, INJSO and INPhO, respectively.  The IOQ will be jointly organised by the IAPT and HBCSE. The academic responsibility of Part I: NSE will be borne by IAPT, while that of Part II: INO will be borne by HBCSE. The remaining stages of the Olympiad programme will be carried out by HBCSE.  Online enrolment for IOQ is expected to start on IAPT website (iaptexam.in) by 15 October, 2020. Further confirmation regarding this and detailed information regarding eligibility, enrolment and syllabus for IOQ will be announced shortly. These are expected to be similar to previous years.  The tentative schedule of IOQ examinations is as under: • Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Junior Science (IOQJS): January 17, 2021 (Sunday) 14:30 - 17:30 hrs • Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Astronomy (IOQA): February 6, 2021 (Saturday) 9:00 -12:00 hrs • Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Chemistry (IOQC): February 6, 2021 (Saturday) 14:30 - 17:30 hrs • Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Physics (IOQP) February 7, 2021 (Sunday) 9:00 - 12:00 hrs • Indian Olympiad Qualifier in Biology (IOQB): February 7, 2021 (Sunday) 14:30 - 17:30 hrs Please note that this schedule is tentative, and is subject to change at short notice, depending on the prevailing pandemic situation in the country.  The screening criterion for the Part II (INO) of IOQ to be evaluated will be similar to the qualification criteria for INO from NSE in previous years. Detailed criteria will be announced soon.  The criteria for qualification for OCSC on the basis of performance in Part II (INO) of IOQ will be similar to INO-to-OCSC criteria applied in previous years. Detailed criteria will be announced soon.  The programme for stages beyond IOQ will be announced at an appropriate later time

NTSE 2020 Exam Pattern, Exam Duration and Marking Scheme

The state education boards and NCERT prescribe NTSE 2020 Exam Pattern on their official websites. The exam pattern will help candidates in preparing for the national level exam. Stage 1, exam will be held in November 2020 and stage 2, exam will be conducted on June 2021. For both stages, exam is divided into two parts i.e. Mental Ability Test (MAT), and Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT).

NTSE is organized in offline or pen paper-based mode. The paper is available in both the Hindi and English medium. Students need to select any one language from both the languages. Every correct answer will fetch 1 mark while there is no negative marking for wrong attempts. The total time to answer the paper is 120 minutes for each part. Only those who clear stage-1 will be shortlisted for stage-2 exam.

NTSE 2020 is a national-level scholarship program for class X students in India. Every year around 10,000,000 students appears in the scholarship test out of which only 1000 get scholarships. Find all important details regarding NTSE 2020 Exam Pattern, syllabus and recommended books.

NTSE 2020 Stage-I Exam Pattern

Stage-I is conducted at State/UT level by the concerned State/UT authorities. Candidates have to select 1 language from English or Hindi to solve the paper. Each correct answer is awarded 1 mark and there is no negative marking at this stage. The paper is divided into two parts:

Part 1 – Mental Ability test (MAT): This part contains logical and analytical reasoning based questions. This section tests the candidate’s reasoning, ability to think, evaluate, ability to discriminate and visualize. A total of 50 questions is to be answered under this section.

Part 2 – Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT): This part consists of 150 questions from Science, Mathematics, Social Science and English Language. This section judges the student’s reading abilities, interpretation, evaluation and general awareness of the subjects.

NTSE 2020 Stage-II Exam Pattern

Stage-II is conducted at National Level, where shortlisted students from Stage-I (State-level) exam appear to compete for the scholarship. The paper is divided into two parts – MAT and SAT, like that in Stage-I. There will be 100 questions in both MAT and SAT (Science-40, Maths-20, Social science-40).

The duration of both the exams is 2 hours or 120 minutes. In NTSE Stage 2 exam, there is no negative marking. Only candidates qualifying in both the papers separately will be considered for merit. Selection of the awardee will be made on the basis of total marks scored in MAT and SAT based on merit.

NTSE 2020 Exam Pattern of Stage I and Stage II is given below:
